How Did China Build The World’s Biggest EV Charging Network?2 min read
In the past decade, China has gone from having less than 40,000 public EV chargers to now having several hundred thousand, with thousands more being added each year to what is the world’s biggest EV charging network.
Even by Chinese infrastructure enhancement norms, this is a rapid turnaround. According to China’s EV charging alliance, 650,000 public EV chargers will be deployed in 2022, boosting China’s total to 1.8 million. There are 383,000 just in the Guangdong province, which is more than double the total number of public chargers across the entire United States.
Last year, China added 2.6 million home chargers, but the continued growth in public charging stations is the actual game changer for Chinese EV drivers, considering that over 900 million residents live in cities. Because the majority of these folks do not belong to single-family houses and many do not have private parking space, installing home chargers is not a possibility.
But how did China manage to establish the world’s biggest EV charging network? The answer lies in China’s ambition to make the country the hub of the global EV revolution.
The government began subsidizing the purchase of electric vehicles in 2010, and the State Council published a plan in 2015 to create charging infrastructure to service 5 million electric vehicles by 2020. The two major state power providers, as well as local governments, got in immediately, with public bus and taxi fleets adopting electric, and close to 40 Chinese cities offering incentives or subsidies to businesses that install chargers. The government’s investment prompted the private sector to follow suit, with TELD leading the charge.
Although QR code payment via applications, such as Alipay and WeChat, have contributed to the ease of EV driving, China’s system still has faults, such as being concentrated in wealthier eastern areas and failing to keep up with demand.
