ExpressLane 101: A Practical Walkthrough of How It Works
ExpressLane powers parking access across a wide range of environments, from gated garages to fully gateless setups. To help teams get a clearer understanding of how it all comes together, we hosted an ExpressLane 101 session focused on the fundamentals.
This session walks through how ExpressLane works at the lane, the differences between setups, and what goes into running it smoothly day to day.

What the Session Covers
The session is designed as a practical overview, covering:
- How ExpressLane works at the lane
- Key access methods and session flows
- Gated vs gateless setups
- Hardware components and how they work together
- Additional tools that support operations
- How regional installer support fits in
How ExpressLane Works at the Lane
At its core, ExpressLane connects vehicle identification with parking activity.
As a vehicle moves through a lane:
- The license plate is captured
- The system identifies the vehicle
- A session is created, updated, or matched
- Permits or validations are applied if available
This creates a seamless experience for both entry and exit, while keeping all activity tracked digitally.
Gated vs Gateless Setups
ExpressLane supports both gated and gateless environments, each designed for different operational needs.
Gated setups use automated barriers for controlled access and support on-site payment options like kiosks and tap-to-pay.
Gateless setups operate without physical barriers, using license plate recognition to track sessions and digital enforcement tools like GMP IQ.
Both models rely on the same underlying system, with differences in how access, payments, and enforcement are handled.
Tools That Support Operations
Beyond the lane, ExpressLane is supported by a set of tools that help manage operations and visibility:
- Lane Activity for real-time lane insights
- GMP IQ for reporting, dashboards, and enforcement
- AVA for AI voice assistance
- Customer Support Module for parker support
- Capacity Manager and Partner Portal for operational control
- GSC for operator support
These tools extend ExpressLane into everyday operations.
Regional Support with Installers
ExpressLane deployments are supported by regional installers, either through GMP’s network or existing partners.
Installers assist with:
- On-site service and maintenance
- Hardware support
- Issue resolution
This ensures that lane operations continue to run smoothly over time.
Bringing It All Together
ExpressLane connects vehicles, lanes, and digital systems into a single flow, making it easier to manage parking operations across different environments.
If you’re working with ExpressLane or exploring it further, this session is a helpful starting point to understand how everything fits together.
